We are off to a great start in Kindergarten in Room 3. We have introduced so many routines and new faces to the children this week and they have been doing so great! We started the week using the book, The Little Engine that Could. This year there are going to be lots of things that we will try that are new--we want to be just like the blue engine and try our hardest and remember "I think I can ". This set us up for such a positive view on learning-- I often heard the children saying"we want to be like the blue engine" this week. We have also spent a lot of time on expectations : be kind, be safe , do your job. The children love to be praised but they especially like getting "Gotchas" and Eagle Bucks for meeting these expectations. When they get 10 , they may go to the school store, in the morning, and choose a prize. We have also been working on reading. You can read a book three ways: retelling the story (by what you remember) , reading the pictures or by reading the words. Pete the Cat: I like My White Shoes and Brown Bear, Brown Bear both helped the children understand that they are already readers!! The children loved retelling these books. Both books were a perfect introduction to reading color words. In math we introduced patterns, pattern blocks and graphing. The children went to art and library this week too.
